BAAM
Draft Statement on Autism Insurance
It
is the position of the Behavior Analysis Association of Michigan
(BAAM) that the state of Michigan
should pass legislation to require insurance companies and other
health funding agencies to cover the diagnosis and treatment of problems
associated with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) as they are defined
in the most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual
(DSM). Coverage should mandate the provision of demonstrably effective,
scientifically validated treatment methods to establish and enhance
functional independent living skills as prescribed by physicians,
psychologists, and other properly trained and credentialed professionals.
Coverage should not be age-dependent, nor should treatments be subjected
to arbitrary limitations. The covered should be provided transparent
legal mechanisms such as expedited arbitration to redress inappropriate
denials, changes, and limitations to coverage. Coverage of ASDs should
not preclude or subtract from coverage otherwise available to the
insured for the appropriate treatment of other physical, behavioral,
mental, or emotional disorders.
