Alert:

Michigan Psychology Licensing Board has enacted sweeping changes to licensure requirements for full and limited-license psychologists. These changes are effective August 14, 2007, with some provisions becoming active during the next several years.

These changes include reducing post-doctoral hours for full license applicants from 4000 to 2000 hours and requiring limited-license applicants to pass a national examination. The BAAM website has been updated to reflect the rules changes. (see Behavior News).

(Disclaimer)

This page contains selected sections of the Michigan Public Health Code and Michigan Board of Psychlogy General Rules relevant to the practice of psychology in Michigan, including the use of "behavior modification" techniques (see section 333.18201).

Behavior analysts working in Michigan should be aware that standard behavioral interventions may be covered by the regulations.

"Practice of psychology" means the rendering to individuals, groups, organizations, or the public of services involving the application of principles, methods, and procedures of understanding, predicting, and influencing behavior for the purposes of the diagnosis, assessment related to diagnosis, prevention, amelioration, or treatment of mental or emotional disorders, disabilities or behavioral adjustment problems by means of psychotherapy, counseling, behavior modification, hypnosis, biofeedback techniques, psychological tests, or other verbal or behavioral means. The practice of psychology shall not include the practice of medicine such as prescribing drugs, performing surgery, or administering electro-convulsive therapy. (From Section 333.18201).

Behavior analysts should also be aware that Michigan requires a license, certification, authorization, or other exception under law to practice a recognized health profession, including psychology (see 333.18212, 333.16294 and 333.16171). Supervision after training is also required for licensure, and ongoing supervision is required for those holding a Limited License in Psychology (see 338.2510a).

Regulations for psychology and related health professions for other states, territories, and Canadian provinces may be found here.
