Peer-reviewed studies show effectiveness of ABA treatments for autism

16 of 29 children with autism in intensive ABA therapy tested in normal range after 14 months, compared to only 5 of 32 children in "mixed" treatment. Significant improvements were seen in all children in the ABA group. (Behavior News)

A new study by Glen Sallows and Tamlynn Graupner of the Wisconsin Early Autism Project shows that 48% of children with autism given intensive behavioral treatment achieved average outcome scores and succeeded in regular education classrooms (Behavior News)

Analysis of Tennessee ABA Legal Case

Gary Mayerson: Analysis of Zachary Deal v. Hamilton County Department of Education (Wrightslaw)

Synopsis*: Using excoriating language... Administrative Law Judge A. James Andrews has held in a 45-page decision that the Hamilton County (Tennessee) Department of Education...repeatedly violated federal law in failing to provide an appropriate education to Zachary Deal, a seven-year-old Chattanooga boy with autism.

Judge Andrews found that in violation of the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), a federal statute which guarantees an individualized educational program to children with disabilities, the HCDE embraced and perpetuated an illegal policy of refusing to consider the very autism intervention--- intensive one-to-one Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)--- which Zachary needed to make educational progress. Editorial promotes funding for intensive behavior therapy for autism: NYT Op-Ed (Registration required)

"Insurance companies and others often deny coverage by arguing that treatment methods are experimental, but that assertion no longer holds water. Studies now show that 40 percent to 50 percent of toddlers undergoing intensive Applied Behavior Analysis, one of the best-known methods, can be mainstreamed in regular classrooms without personal aides by the time they reach school age. (The figure is close to zero for children not given special care.) Most of the other 50 percent to 60 percent make notable progress too. The applied behavior method breaks down learning into simple steps....Other applied behavior approaches involve reinforcing appropriate behaviors in daily life and creating opportunities for social interaction." BAAM-ASIG Mission Statement

BAAM-ASIG is dedicated to providing information and education to professionals, students, and parents interested in autism and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). We plan to do this in the following ways:

  • Provide information on upcoming educational opportunities such as conferences, workshops, and classes related to autism and ABA.
  • Provide information about recent publications related to autism and ABA.
  • Provide information on agencies in Michigan that provide ABA services for children with autism
  • Provide a forum for discussion on autism and ABA through our online email list at http://www.smartgroups.com/groups/BAAM-ASIG.
